Anne Shirley, a spirited orphan hailing from the fictional community of Bolingbroke in Nova Scotia, experiences a transformative shift when she is sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. The unmarried siblings, in their fifties and sixties, initially intended to adopt a boy to assist Matthew in managing their Green Gables farm, situated in the fictional town of Avonlea. However, due to a miscommunication, Anne is sent in place of the intended boy.

The novel concludes with Anne embracing the uncertainties of the future, grateful for the enduring bond with Gilbert and looking forward to the unfolding chapters of her life.
