ABSTRACT

This study aims to map rainfall distribution using CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station Data) data for the 2014–2024 period and evaluate forest area zoning in East Kalimantan Province based on biophysical variables. East Kalimantan was chosen because it has extensive forest areas but is experiencing high pressure due to development activities, including the relocation of the National Capital City (IKN). This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with four main parameters: rainfall, slope gradient, soil type, and land cover. Each parameter is processed in raster format and reclassified based on the level of suitability for forest functions. The analysis was conducted using the Weighted Overlay method with weightings: slope (40%), land cover (30%), soil type (20%), and rainfall (10%). The results of the analysis show that areas classified as "Highly Suitable" (S3) are spread across the central and northern parts of the province with characteristics of gentle slopes, fertile soil, and natural forest cover. Conversely, areas with low suitability levels (S1 and N) are dominated by built-up areas, low rainfall, and steep slopes. This research produces a forest suitability zoning map that can be used as a reference in sustainable forest management planning and land conversion mitigation in East Kalimantan.
