OPTIMASI PROSES DEPLOYMENT APLIKASI RUBY ON RAILS MENGGUNAKAN GITHUB ACTIONS (STUDI KASUS: INVESTRACK)

ABSTRAK

Dalam pengembangan perangkat lunak, proses deployment—pengiriman versi terbaru aplikasi agar dapat digunakan oleh pengguna—memiliki peran penting untuk menjaga efisiensi, keandalan, dan kecepatan rilis. Namun, di banyak organisasi atau tim pengembang, proses ini masih dilakukan secara manual. Hal ini mengakibatkan tingginya risiko kesalahan manusia, inkonsistensi waktu pengerjaan, dan kurangnya dokumentasi proses yang memadai. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengoptimalkan proses Continuous Deployment—metode pengiriman pembaruan aplikasi secara otomatis setiap kali ada perubahan—pada aplikasi berbasis Ruby on Rails. Solusi yang digunakan adalah GitHub Actions, sebuah layanan otomasi yang terhubung langsung dengan sistem kontrol versi GitHub, sehingga setiap perubahan dapat segera diproses tanpa intervensi manual. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus kualitatif dengan proyek internal bernama InvesTrack (nama disamarkan) sebagai objek uji. InvesTrack merupakan aplikasi berbasis web yang dirancang khusus sebagai platform jejaring sosial bagi para profesional di bidang keuangan, seperti investor individu, perencana keuangan, dan agen asuransi. Fitur di dalamnya dirancang untuk membantu para pengguna tersebut saling terhubung, berinteraksi, serta berbagi informasi dan sumber daya terkait investasi, asuransi, dan perencanaan keuangan melalui fitur RSS dan playlist YouTube yang tersedia di dalam aplikasi, dengan tujuan membentuk komunitas dan membangun jejaring profesional secara digital. Sebelum proses otomasi diterapkan, deployment dilakukan secara manual melalui SSH dan Capistrano, misalnya dengan memindahkan berkas satu per satu ke server, yang memakan waktu dan berisiko tinggi terjadi kesalahan. Setelah mengimplementasikan workflow YAML pada GitHub Actions, proses deployment menjadi sepenuhnya otomatis, dimulai dari push ke main branch hingga aplikasi siap dijalankan pada server staging. Hasil implementasi menunjukkan peningkatan efisiensi waktu hingga 60%, berkurangnya kesalahan konfigurasi, dan meningkatnya konsistensi serta dokumentasi proses. Workflow ini juga dapat dikembangkan untuk mendukung notifikasi otomatis, pengujian unit (continuous integration), dan strategi rollback jika terjadi kegagalan—mekanisme untuk mengembalikan aplikasi ke versi sebelumnya yang masih berjalan normal apabila pembaruan terbaru menimbulkan masalah. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa GitHub Actions adalah solusi praktis, ringan, dan layak untuk tim pengembang skala kecil hingga menengah yang menggunakan Ruby on Rails dan GitHub.

ABSTRACT

In software development, the deployment process—the delivery of the latest application version for end-user use—plays a critical role in ensuring efficiency, reliability, and release velocity. However, in many organizations and development teams, this process is still carried out manually. Such practices increase the risk of human error, introduce inconsistencies in execution time, and often lack sufficient documentation. This study aims to optimize the Continuous Deployment process—an automated method of delivering application updates upon every change—for a Ruby on Rails–based application. The proposed solution leverages GitHub Actions, an automation service natively integrated with GitHub’s version control system, enabling every code modification to be processed seamlessly without manual intervention. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using an internal project called InvesTrack (name anonymized) as the test subject. InvesTrack is a web-based application specifically designed as a social networking platform for professionals in the financial sector, including individual investors, financial planners, and insurance agents. Its features enable users to connect, interact, and share resources related to investment, insurance, and financial planning through integrated RSS feeds and curated YouTube playlists. The platform aims to foster community-building and professional networking in a digital environment. Prior to automation, deployment was performed manually via SSH and Capistrano, often requiring developers to transfer files individually to the server—a time-consuming process highly prone to errors. After implementing a YAML-based workflow in GitHub Actions, deployment became fully automated, starting from a push to the main branch through to application readiness on the staging server. The results demonstrated a 60% improvement in deployment time efficiency, a reduction in configuration errors, and enhanced consistency and documentation of the process. Furthermore, the workflow can be extended to support automated notifications, unit testing (continuous integration), and rollback strategies in case of failure—mechanisms that restore the application to a previously stable version if the latest update introduces issues. This study demonstrates that GitHub Actions is a practical, lightweight, and viable solution for small- to medium-sized development teams using Ruby on Rails and GitHub, significantly enhancing the reliability and efficiency of deployment pipelines.
